Occupational Therapy
Occupational Therapy focuses on developing and maintaining people’s skills to carry out their everyday activities such as personal care, home tasks and leisure and work. Our occupational therapists work with other health professionals on the wards to care for our patients and support safe discharges home.
Who we care for
Occupational Therapists can work with individuals of any age. At Fairfield hospital the OT team work with patients who are older than 18 years. For Paediatric OT services in the local area, please refer to the Fairfield Community Health Centre
Access and eligibility
Fairfield Hospital patients may be referred to Occupational Therapy by other allied health, doctors or nurses. If you feel that you would benefit from a referral to an OT, please ask any of the hospital staff to get in contact with us.
What to expect
Occupational Therapists work with patients to enhance their ability to engage in activities by modifying the activity or the environment to better support their needs to perform tasks safely and independently.

Occupational Therapists encourage independence in activities and may encourage you to bring your normal clothes, toiletries, assistive devices and other personal belongings to hospital to help to promote your engagement and independence in activities on the ward while you are here.

Allied Health Services at Fairfield Hospital
Allied Health professionals are an essential part of the patient care team at Fairfield Hospital. The allied health team comprises Occupational Therapists, Allied Health Assistants, Physiotherapists, Social Workers, Aboriginal Liaison Officers, Dietitians and Diet Aids, Speech Pathologists, and Exercise Physiologists to support patients throughout their recovery and ongoing health needs.
Across inpatient and outpatient settings, our Allied Health teams:
- Help patients regain function, mobility, independence, and confidence
- Provide assessment, therapy, and education tailored to individual needs
- Support communication, nutritional wellbeing, and psychosocial health
- Work closely with medical and nursing teams to deliver coordinated, patient-centred care
- Assist with discharge planning and smooth transitions back to home or community services

Referrals can be submitted in one of three ways
